The Fancy Workers of Weston County Wyoming is a group of women from 11 – 95 who have been turning donated yarn into hats, scarves, and mittens for various local and regional organizations as well as slippers for cancer patients in South Dakota and even wool socks for orphans in Russia.
In 2009 we decided to challenge ourselves to making a unique gift to honor the men and women of our armed services. The Fancy Workers asked everyone to help them create a special patriotic afghan made up of 64 blocks individually created to honor a past or present member of the armed services. Each red white and blue block included the creator’s name as well as the names of those members of the Armed Service he or she is honoring.
The story of this special work of art will be contained in a beautiful scrapbook that will tell both the history of the project as well as information about the creator of each block and the people they are honoring. The finished afghan and scrapbook will be available for viewing at various locations so that everyone can celebrate and honor those who have given us so much.
The Fancy Workers would like thank all those who participated in this special project by sending up to four 10x10 inch knitted or crocheted blocks. 64 blocks were chosen for this special patriotic afghan and the remaining blocks were use for additional afghans, lap robes, and pillows that were raffled off with the proceeds going to the Weston County Senior Center and the local VFW &VFWA.
This was a truly memorable project and we hope that the spirit and warmth of all those who participated will continue to grow and inspire future generations and that other organizations will pick up the challenge and sponsor their own Patriot Afghans to honor the special people of our Armed Services. For more information (tips, hints and everything else) on how to sponsor your own Special Patriotic Afghan Challenge please contact the Fancy Workers c/o of Weston County Senior Services, Att. Isabelle, 627 Pine St., Newcastle, WY 82701. Or email us at: knitting@fancyworkers.com. Thank you so much and may we always remember the special people in our lives.
